MEET THE XTREME FALL CONVENTION FACULTY

James Velasco joins us from Los Angeles, CA where is working as a Dancer, Actor, and Singer. He has danced in Music Videos, Commercials, on Regional and Broadway Stages. He performed as “Henry” on the Broadway Tour of Disney’s Newsies: The Musical. His secondary education includes North Carolina School of the Arts Contemporary Program, AMDA-New York & Los Angeles for Dance, Music, and Acting. In addition to Touring with Newsies he has also worked for Disney Cruise Lines, MAC Cosmetics, American Horror Story, Enki by Leroy Merlin where Tyce Diorio was the Choreographer, and Don’t Fail Idaho just to highlight a few. James has a strong background in all styles of dance & performing with strong focus on Musical Theater, Ballet, Contemporary, Partnering, and Advanced Tumbling. When James is not on the stage or screen dancing, singing, or acting he is working on his craft as a Song Writer and Vocal Performing Artist. James was with us for the 2021 National Championships and he is excited to be back share his passion and love for Dance in the Xtreme Dance Convention classroom.

Kelly Sammon is a Tour Director for the ANDC Family along with Co-Directing Xtreme Dance Convention & Challenge. She resides in Dayton Ohio with her Fiancée and daughters Reagen and Brinley. Kelly is a 2007 graduate of Kent State University in northeastern Ohio. She graduated cum laude with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts Degree in Dance Performance. The dance program at Kent State University focused not only on the technical aspects of a meticulous training schedule, but also on a strong historical and academic perspective of dance, preparing her to become a professional dancer and educator. Kelly benefitted from training in an academic environment and was able to train alongside professionals in the field, who came to the University to set pieces on the pre-professional company, The Kent Dance Ensemble, where Kelly was chose as a sophomore to join. Kelly’s performance credits consisted of works under Cliff Keuter, Robin Richardson, Tanya Mucci and Sabatino Verlezza. She also had the privilege of performing at The American College Dance Festival at University of Buffalo and Wayne State in Michigan. While at Kent State, Kelly studied under the direction of many greats; Barbara Verlezza, Andrea Shearer, Joan Meggitt and Kimberly Karpanty through the concentrations of the May O’Donnell technique, Erick Hawkins technique, Lynn Simonson jazz technique and Release Post-Modern. Kelly has also had extensive training in Improvisation and Composition. Through her tenure in college, Kelly was the Teacher’s Assistant for master classes for students with disabilities at the SELS Division of Kent State University and also acted as a Dance Instructor (KSU Non-Credit Instructor).  After graduation, Kelly danced professionally with Travesty Dance Group and Verlezza Dance until she relocated to Washington D.C. in 2008 to accept an esteemed full-time position with Adagio Ballet in Arlington and Fairfax, Virginia as a Program Director and Marketing Coordinator. She also acted as a guest artist as the Advanced Tap instructor at the Center for Ballet Arts in Fairfax City, VA. Kelly danced professionally in the national setting with Dancin’ Unlimited under the direction of Marilyn York, and also worked with the CAPS program, Creative Arts Program in Public Schools. Kelly was the Owner and Artistic Director of K-Force Dance Academy for several years where numerous students continued their dance education in such venues as Alvin Ailey, Eastern Carolina Dane Program, and University of the Arts in Philadelphia, to name a few. Kelly was also the Dance Team Coach for the Battlefield High School Dance Team where she worked and collaborated with collegiate programs and coaches, reviewed, and implemented rules and regulations from organizations such as the American Spirit Championships, Universal Dance Association, and National Collegiate Athletic Association. The Purple Reign Dance Team holds several winnings and title with the Prince William County Dance Championships Dance Team and the Union Regional Championships.

Melissa Pihos joins us from Valdosta, GA where she is a Dance Professor at Valdosta State University. Melissa began dancing at a very young age and has been performing professionally for over 20 years. She has performed all over the United States and her film work has screened in several film festivals across the country. She has danced for Flatlands Dance Theatre, Van Dyke Dance Group, John Gamble Dance Theatre and Sidelong Dance Company. She has also performed in works by Martha Graham, Larry Keigwin and Twyla Tharp. She is an award-winning filmmaker and is currently touring her work, PIHOS A Moving Biography as Alzheimer’s disease awareness events. PIHOS A Moving Biography is a documentary dance/film performance that explores the life of her father, NFL Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Pete Pihos and his battle with Alzheimer’s disease. The work has toured to Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Lubbock, TX, Philadelphia, New York City and Santa Fe. Holding an MFA in Choreography/Dance from UNC-Greensboro, her previous dance faculty appointments include UNC-Greensboro, UNC-Charlotte, High Point University and Salem College. Melissa was awarded the 2018 ADCC Industry Excellence Award for Outstanding Judge & Convention Instructor. She is a loved judge and convention instructor for the ANDC Family and we are always excited to have her.

Rebecca Nyiri, joining us from Pinehurst, NC, has been part of the dance world since she was 2 years old. Taking classes at her mom’s studio, Dance Impressions, she grew up as a competitive dancer attending Dance Machine and other competitions. Rebecca was awarded the coveted title of America’s Miss Dance 2010. She obtained a double major in Dance and Elementary Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Rebecca taught 3rd grade in Pinehurst for 8 years while also teaching classes at Dance Impressions. She is currently staying home with her son, remaining active teaching and working in the dance community. Rebecca has won various choreography awards and was Teacher of the Year 2017. She is a member of DMA and has volunteered as a director for her local CDM Chapter. She has had several choreography opportunities through CDM, including their Junior Member opening dance at their Convention. Rebecca has taught at various workshops/conventions and judged dance competitions for the past ten years.

Robel Kabtiymer is a dancer, choreographer, teacher & a creative artist. He has trained in ballet, jazz, contemporary/modern & hiphop. After graduating high school he dedicated himself in training intensely in hip-hop. He joined an All Star Competitive team and reached top 5 of the Dance World with his teammates ‘‘Rush Crew’’ in 2015-2016.  He’s has danced with professional dance organizations such as Culture Shock DC & Capitol Movement. He has performed internationally in places like Canada on top of teaching workshops at universities in the DMV area as well as Gear Up Dance Convention in Rock Hill, SC & Myrtle Beach, in addition he has also taught in multiple studios and workshops in the Southeast & Mid-Atlantic.  Robel has an innovative and creative style that ignites creativity in dancers to see Hip-Hop in a different light.  We are so excited to have Robel with us.

Whitley Naylor grew up dancing competitively at Main Street Dance in Fuquay-Varina NC. She was America’s Young Miss Dance 2014 and America’s Miss Dance 2018. She went on to attend college at Jacksonville University in Florida and graduated in May 2021 with a BFA in Dance. While at Jacksonville University, she was named The Outstanding Sophomore in Dance as well as The Outstanding Senior in Dance for the College of Fine Arts. She was also a member of The JU Sirens Dance Team for four years and served as captain her senior year. The team won 2nd place this spring at the NDA College Nationals. Since graduating, Whitley is traveling as an instructor with NDA and also teaching full time at Main Street Dance.  Whitley loves sharing her passion.

Daniel Browning from Augusta, GA where he was the Creator and is the CEO of Dance 2 Inspire and the Unleashed Convention. He has been featured on So You Think You Can Dance and America’s Got Talent.  Daniel has worked with artists all over the country performing, choreographing, and directing. He’s worked with Leon Lee (Beyoncé, Ciara, Beth Spangler from The Voice), Stevo Jones (Lyndsey Sterling, Step Up, Lloyd), and he has been featured in many commercials and feature films such as Baywatch, Baby Driver, and Harley Davidson. He has Choreographed opening numbers for Miss Augusta and is currently working with Hip Hop Augusta. His passion is to empower the younger generation, providing resources and opportunities that he never had.  Daniel is a favorite in the ANDC Family.
